Meet at Fort Tuthill for a quick breakfast and depart to the South Rim of Grand Canyon! On foot, you'll spend three days experiencing first hand one of the seven natural wonders of the world! Dropping nearly a mile into the canyon you'll see a variety of rock layers, wildlife, and a barrage of different types of plant life while witnessing a great deal of the geologic and natural history of the Colorado Plateau. After reaching the bottom via the South Kaibab Trail and crossing the Colorado River by bridge, you'll spend a night alongside Bright Angel Creek and enjoy a relaxing evening resting and exploring in camp, along Bright Angel Creek, at the Phantom Ranch lodge, or watching the sunset from the banks of the mighty Colorado River. The following morning, after breakfast and hydrating to prepare for the days hike, you'll set off to start your climb up the Bright Angel trail exploring a different section of the canyon and taking in the breathtaking views surrounding every step on your way to the Indian Gardens Campground. Spend your afternoon at Indian Gardens exploring the surrounding area and relaxing in camp to help prepare for the final hike out of the canyon in the morning. The final morning, after breakfast, you'll start your final exit out of the canyon noticing your pack being much lighter that it was in the beginning! With water stations (depending on conditions) to stop and rest at after 1.5 and 3 miles, the 4.5 mile exit from Indian Gardens to the South Rim will fly by! Once you've reached the top, take a moment to catch your breath and look back over the broad expanse of the canyon you've just conquered before having lunch on the rim and loading up to head back to Flagstaff and Fort Tuthill. This is a strenuous trip requiring a bit of self care, constant hydration, and most importantly honesty about your physical condition and abilities. It involves 3 days of self-assisted backpacking carrying everything we need to enjoy ourselves and survive in a very remote wilderness setting. If you're unsure about your abilities or any medical condition please feel free to reach out the OAP staff at Fort Tuthill with any questions/comments/concerns and we'll be happy to help!
